Oluwaniyi thrilled by national call up Posted on Friday, Feb 12th 2010 The towering shot-stopper, who previously plied his trade with Enugu Rangers, Dolphins and Sharks in the domestic scene, was on Thursday named in a list of 34 players invited for camping ahead of the two-legged qualifier. “I was very thrilled by the news of my call up. This is clear evidence that I am recognized, and I shall not relent in my efforts at regaining international prominence,” he said. “I am ready to serve in whatever capacity at any given time. For me this is a call to national service, and I shall do my very best to justify this invitation” he added. This season the towering shot-stopper has had to compete for starting shirts with the younger Laide Okanlawon in 3SC’s goal, a situation the 28-year-old describes as healthy. “The rivalry has been keen but healthy. Competition is good because it makes you sit up at all times. I think this has helped keep my game on a higher level,” he explains. A one time fringe goalkeeper for the Super Eagles, Oluwaniyi captained the Nigeria U-2$3 side for the botched West African Football Union (WAFU) tournament in 2003, and was on the brink of signing for an Israeli club side three years ago. He was also on the wish list of South African Premier League side Moroka Swallows who were (then) searching for a reliable cover for their Nigerian goalkeeper Greg Etafia. Oluwaniyi would be joined in the Eagles’ team B camp by his Shooting Stars teammate, striker Uche Nwafor whose solitary goal saw 3SC edging Heartland FC 1- 0 in a Glo premiership game in Ibadan last month.
