Shooting Stars win Oyo State FA Cup Posted on Monday, April 20th 2009
Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan emerged the new Oyo State FA Challenge Cup champions after beating upstarts Afijio United of Ilora 2-0 at the Lekan Salami Stadium on Sunday.
Two first half goals by hot shot Timothy Idogbe and midfield sensation Ado Mohammed sealed 3SC’s record 33rd Oyo FA Cup win as Mutiu Adepoju celebrated his first silverware since assuming the post of General Manager and Technical Director last year.. “I am elated at this modest achievement,” said the Nigeria ex-international at the end of the encounter. “We expected a tough game from Afijio because they edged out Crown in the semis, and in a cup final anything can happen. “However, I have to confess that I was not satisfied with the performance of my team in the second half as we allowed the opponents too much room to operate. But all the same it’s a good victory for us as we shift focus to the league.
Adepoju assured Shooting Stars supporters that the club would continue to do its best to surmount the challenges ahead, stressing that Sunday’s FA Cup victory is just a tip of the iceberg.
“I want to assure our teeming fans that this is just the beginning of greater things to come. With their continued support we hope to continue from where we stopped challenge for the ultimate – which is to gain promotion to the Premier League.” Afijio United, who created a big upset when they edged Pro-league side Crown of Ogbomoso in the semi-finals, were unbelievably reticent in the opening 45 minutes as 3SC enjoyed what seemed like a light training session. Nine minutes after the kick off, leading goal scorer Timothy Idogbe slammed home the first goal after an interchange of passes with right wing back Waidi Omololu, Meshach Chukwubuikem and skipper Tope Orelope. Three minutes later Ado Mohammed doubled 3SC’s lead when he blasted the ball into the net following a pull-out by Orelope.
From then on it was one way traffic as Shooting Stars completely dominated proceedings. But further opportunities were wasted as Idogbe, Orelope, Chukwubuikem and Adekunle all came close. Shooting Stars continued to dominate for very long spells and should have scored a bagful of goals but for their profligacy.
However, Afijio suddenly woke up from their slumber and threatened to break down 3SC’s rear in the second half but goalkeeper Segun Oluwaniyi and his defenders were up to the task.
A minute’s silence was observed prior to kick off in honour of former Abiola Babes and Green Eagles midfielder Chris Anigala who recently passed on.
With Sunday’s victory, Shooting Stars are now set for the National First Division Week 24 showdown against Bussdor FC in Owerri on Thursday.
