Shooting edge Gombe in last league game Posted on Thursday, July 8th 2010 3SC, who had staved off the threat of relegation by beating the already demoted Ranchers Bees 2-0 two weeks ago, took their time in this game, and duly avenged the 2-0 deficit they suffered at Gombe United in January. Tope Orelope struck the only goal of the encounter when he volleyed home the winner on 75 minutes after beating two opposing defenders inside the 18-yard box. 3SC Media Officer Jubril Arowolo reports that the game lacked sparkle as both teams failed to live up to the standard expected of two premiership sides. But, as they say, a win is a win, and the three points was all that mattered at the end of the day. With this victory, Shooting Stars finished at a respectable 11th position on the 20-team Glo Premier League log with 52 points in 38 matches. Wednesday’s game was coach Fatai Amoo’s 10th league game in charge of the team since taking up the mantle of leadership in April. The former Super Eagles assistant coach virtually revived the team and instilled a new sense of purpose which saw the Oluyole Warriors winning six matches, drawing two and losing only two league games under his tutelage. He also led 3SC to the Round of 32 of the National Federation Cup where they lost JUTH FC of Jos in Minna after edging out Bukola Babes of Ilorin in the previous round. Meanwhile, Enyimba won their 6th Nigeria Premier League title on Wednesday after beating closest rivals Kano Pillars 2-1 in Aba. Osas Idehen and Uche Kalu scored for the Elephants while Moses Ogaga pulled one back for the Kano-based side. Enyimba thus emerged champions for the 2009-2010 season with 70 points in 38 matches while Pillars finished as runners-up after amassing 66 points from the same number of matches. Both teams have now qualified to represent Nigeria in next year’s CAF Champions League competition. Wikki Tourists, Bayelsa United, Gateway FC and Ranchers Bees occupied the last four places on the log, and have been relegated. By Mark Ogagan |
