Ogedegbe goes home Posted on Monday,Nov. 9th 2009
Legendary former Shooting Stars and Green Eagles goalkeeper, Best Ogedegbe (MON) was laid to rest last Friday, November 6 at the Ultimate gardenscemetery in Ibadan.
Several Nigeria ex-internationals graced the burial ceremony of the one time 3SC and Abiola Babes star to pay their last respect.
Ogedegbe tragically passed away on Monday, September 28 after being in a coma for a week following an eye operation at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
The one time Green Eagles safest pair of hands had spent time at the intensive unit of the hospital, where he was kept alive with the aid of a life support machine.
Born on 3rd September, 1954, Ogedegbe was one of the heroes when Nigeria won her first ever Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil in 1980. He was preferred by Brazilian coach Otto Gloria to man the goalpost for Nigeria ahead of popular choice Emmanuel Okala. He also represented Nigeria at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
Four years earlier he had featured for Shooting Stars as they became the first Nigerian club to win the African Cup Winners’ Cup.
Ogedegbe, an assistant coach for Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt during the 2008/09 season, also worked for Wikki Tourists as goalkeeper trainer and was a member of Nigeria’s technical crew to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing where the Dream Team won a silver medal.
Only recently, he signed a deal to train Premier League club Sharks of Port Harcourt.
