Federation Cup draw holds in Abuja …3SC poised to begin cup defence Posted on Tuesday, March 9th 2010
As the Federation Cup draw holds in Abuja Wednesday, reigning Oyo State champions Shooting Stars are poised to make a successful defence of their title and win the trophy for the 34th time in their history. 3SC claimed the cup for a record 33rd time last year after beating Afigio United 2-0.
A total of 20 clubs in Oyo State including 3SC have so far put in their entries for this year’s edition of the competition.
Assistant General Secretary (competitions) of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Dr. Sanusi Mohammed disclosed that more than 500 clubs have registered with the federation through their state football associations, with the Lagos State FA recording 60 as the highest number of entries so far.
“As at last Tuesday when we had the last count of the entries, Lagos had 60 and Kaduna had the next highest number with 52,” he said.
“But we also have a state like Anambra where we have not had any entry so far,” he added.
Mohammed, however, cautioned that the figures might not in the long run represent the final figures in terms of registration for the competition which replaced the FA Challenge Cup last year.
“Some states can still bring more entries before the draw and that means the current figures can change,‘‘ he said.
The draw will signify the beginning of the competition nationwide, starting at the state level and later at the national level.
Enyimba are the defending champions at national level.
