Shooting Stars Sports Club stand out as one of Nigeria’s leading club sides. They were the first team to bring continental glory to Nigeria when they clinched the (now rested) African Cup Winners Cup in 1976.
Since then the Oluyole Warriors have captured several other laurels both locally and internationally. The club’s rich history dates back several years ago when their legendary founder Chief Lekan Salami actualized a lofty dream.
He had put heads together with the late Israel Adebajo and Justice Chuba Ikpeazu to contribute their quota to improving the country's image in soccer.
Hence, each of them resolved to establish a club side in their own domains. As a result, Chief Lekan Salami settled for Shooting Stars FC in the West, Ikpeazu founded Redoubtables Football Club in the East and the late Israel Adebajo formedStationery Stores FC in Lagos.
The name Shooting Stars was a metamorphosis of the then reigning Pepsi Cola football Club formed in 1960 and owned by Western Nigeria Development Corporation (WNDC) it was a subsidiary quasi-government corporation of the then Western Nigeria.
As such, it was not too long before the transformation to the Industrial Investment and Credit Corporation (IICC) from the WNDC, with the bulk of Pepsi Cola Football players in 1963.
However, what remained of the Pepsi Football Club finally phased out when the Corporation's management could not maintain the two sides in the Division One of the Ibadan Football Association League in 1967.
The acronym "Shooting Stars" was added with the suggestion of the late Jide Johnson and Niyi Omowon as foundation members who believed that the players were "stars" in their own right.
