Adekunle saves the day as 3SC edge Gateway                  Posted on Monday, Feb 15th 2010

Shooting Stars eased their relegation worries with a hard-fought but well-deserved 1-0 defeat of Gateway United of Abeokuta in a Glo Premier League tie decided in Ibadan last Saturday.

Agitated home fans at the Liberty Stadium heaved a big sigh of relief as Bolaji Adekunle broke the deadlock with 17 minutes left to play in regulation time.

The ball-holding midfielder blasted his connecting header past a packed Gateway defence from a free kick taken a few metres from the edge of the box to send Ibadan fans into raptures and take 3SC’s points haul to 23 on the log.

The result of Saturday’s game did not reflect the true pace of play as Shooting Stars were stretched to the limits in a dour game that could have gone either way.

3SC’s Media Officer Jubril Arowolo reports that the home team performed below par but at the end the victory was deserved.

For interim coach Mutiu Adepoju, it was more than a significant achievement as he recorded his fourth win since taking over from the sacked Phillip Boamah last December.

Adepoju, who doubles as General Manager of the team, has a chance to extend his winning streak when 3SC visit Gateway on Saturday in the corresponding fixture of last weekend’s match. The Week 20 cracker is slated for the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.

Meanwhile, Adepoju has confirmed the sacking of eight players as the team reorganizes it’s arsenal in the current midseason transfer period. Amongst the ‘unproductive’ players sent packing is midfielder Ado Mohammed and goalkeeper Jimmy Bello.
