3SC shock Gateway in Ilaro        Posted on Monday, Feb 22th 2010

Shooting Stars opened the second round of the Glo Premier League campaign with an away victory on Saturday when they edged Gateway United 2-1 in Ilaro.

A second half brace from Timothy Idogbe (his first pair of goals for the season) cancelled out Ebube Okpokwu’s 33rd minute opener to give 3SC their first win outside Ibadan and restore the confidence in stand-in coach Mutiu Adepoju. 3SC had defeated Gateway by a lone goal when both teams squared up at the Liberty Stadium the previous weekend.

This time both teams finished the game with 10 men apiece after 3SC defender Daniel Mende and Gateway’s Abiola Ganiyu were given their marching orders in the 34th and 54th minutes respectively.

For Shooting Stars it’s a resurgence of sorts, particularly for their agitated fans who have always looked forward to a good away result like this one. Saturday's win moved Shooting Stars well away from the relegation zone into midtable pending the results of Sunday's matches.

But it was Kano Pillars who achieved the biggest result of the weekend when they flushed five goals past Ocean Boys in a one-sided encounter decided at the Kano Pillars Stadium in Sabon Gari. Victor Namo and Ahmed Musa grabbed a brace each in the 5-1 whitewash, while another from Shagari completed the rout. Ocean Boys’ consolatory goal was scored by goalkeeper Iboro Akpakpan.

In Port Harcourt, Emmanuel Nwachi converted a second half penalty as Dolphins earned the full marks against visiting Lobi Stars in a 1-0 victory at the Liberation Stadium.

It was a similar score-line at the Kaduna Township Stadium where Ranch Bees overpowered Heartland FC of Owerri. Muyideen Fine Fine’s 10 minute strike separated the teams in a keenly-contested encounter.

Wikki Tourists failed to avenge the previous week’s 4-0 bashing by Sunshine Stars as they were held 1-1 at home by the same side. The Akure side shot into a surprise lead after only three minutes through red-hot Dele Olorundare, but former Enyimba star Tony Alegbe restored parity for Wikki 20 minutes later.

At the newly-refurbished Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna, Niger Tornadoes claimed the maximum points against hard-fighting Sharks in a 2-1 victory. Afolabi Abdulrasheed and Eugene Salami struck in the second stanza as the home side overcame the shock of going behind through Victor Ezeji’s 25th minute goal.
